Sungworld developing an Android MID tablet

Sungworld, a Chinese manufacturer specializing mainly in laptops and GPS devices, has something new up its sleeves: a 7-inch Android tablet MID that is set to launch around the end of this month.

This new entry into the increasingly crowded Android tablet market is quite attractive albeit a little thick with a glass front, curved corners, and brushed metallic surround, clearly with a bit of inspiration from Apple. The shot of the GUI above also seems to have adopted a lot of Mac icons, but is probably just a placeholder. Hardware specifications are pretty comprehensive if not spectacular with an ARM926 processor powering proceedings, a 7-inch WVGA touch screen, 128MB of RAM, 2GB of local storage (SSD), microSD card support, two USB ports, and WiFi. More interestingly, the Sungworld tablet is said to be capable of playing back full HD 1080p videos and outputting them via the built-in HDMI port.

Aigo launches feature-packed N500 Maemo MID

Makers of a line of mobile internet devices that included the P8860, the first Intel-powered MID to be available worldwide in 2008, Aigo has just launched the N500, which is a bit of a departure in several areas compared to most of its previous MID offerings.

For starters, the device uses an ARM-based 806MHz Marvell PXA310+ processor powering the Maemo OS, rather than an Intel Atom running Moblin. This makes the N500, ironically possessing a very Nokia-esque name, the second non-Nokia device to run Maemo, the first being the very similar Optima OP5-E. Going beyond the capabilities of most other MIDs, Aigo has packed the N500 full of additional functionality creating a really versatile mobile device, including telephone communications and GPS.

Nokia X6 16GB announced, Comes Without Music

Nokia’s just announced a 16GB version of its crowd pleasing, capacitive touchscreen X6 to compliment the current 32GB model. As expected, the new handset offers many similarities to its sibling, including a 3.2-inch widescreen capacitive display and 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a dual LED flash. Unfortunately, this device is Comes with Music-deficient, meaning that you’ll have to load tunes onto the device the old fashioned way (though it’s not like that ever seemed like a big deal to begin with). In addition to EA’s Spore, this bad boy includes Asphalt4 and DJ Mix Tour by Gameloft and an all-new Ovi Maps (with free walk and drive navigation, Michelin and Lonely Planet guides). Available in four colors, including black, white, white with yellow highlights, and white with pink highlights. Expect to see this one roll out sometime this quarter for a price to be announced.

Lenovo LePhone Pictures Are LeLovely

Although the awkwardly aligned keyboard layout seems more like an OCD-inspired distraction more than anything else, the Lenovo Lephone looks absolutely amazing otherwise. New press pictures have popped up in the Flickr Photostream of the company and we’re left drooling:

SmartQ V5 HD MID finally launches in China

Remember the SmartQ V5 MID first announced back in September as the SmartV 5? There hasn’t been much news on this promising device since then apart from information on the specifications and some images, but now we’re happy to see that the little brother of the already-launched SmartQ V7 has just gone on sale in China for 1099 yuan, which works out to around US$161.

Chinese Government to Disconnect Sexters

I guess since the Chinese government is on a roll with these privacy violations, they’ve decided to get service providers to cut off any customer who use certain offensive keywords in text messages, all in the name of cutting down on mobile porn. This kind of censorship is par for course, considering China already blocks adult content via the web, but there’s the argument that SMS messages sent from one person to another is entirely private and doesn’t constitute pornography. Besides that, the whole purity angle could just as easily be a roundabout way of getting access to people’s text messages and scanning for other criteria, such as political volatility – but we’ll never really know since the specific criteria for surveillance are undisclosed. Bum deal overall, but the real victims here are the saucy Chinese schoolgirls who could get busted for naughty texts. Fight on, you brave, giggly, barely-legal warriors. Fight on.*

ViewSonic VPC08 bring a Windows XP phone

Remember the xpPhone? The one that can run a PC Version of Windows XP. I used to think that it was one of a kind until i just found another one in the making. This one is under development by ViewSonic and is powered by a Intel ULV Processor.

The phone’s rumoured specifications include a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 4.3” touchscreen, 8GB of internal memory and 512MB RAM. This phone would also feature secondary display and number pad along with a 2MP camera. Interestingly, this XP Phone from ViewSonic has a rumoured price tag too. It is expected to sell at $800.

The phone is far from reality and with no official announcement from ViewSonic, there are a fair chances of no such phone in the making at all. Even if it is, it is not coming to the market anywhere in the near future (though its a different debate as to how good is the UI compared to the Android / iPhone).
